How to Choose the Right Birth Doula?

If you’re searching for "how to choose the right birth doula," chances are you’re preparing for one of the most meaningful days of your life—and you want support you can trust.

Birth doula in Boulder County

Families across Boulder County, Longmont, Louisville, Lafayette, Erie, Niwot, and Lyons are increasingly choosing to work with birth doulas for one simple reason: birth goes more smoother when you feel safe and supported.

As a DONA-certified birth doula and HypnoBirthing educator serving Boulder County, I’ve supported more than 50 births since 2021 at local hospitals including Boulder Community Health, Avista Adventist Hospital, and CU Longs Peak Hospital.

In this guide, I’ll walk through what makes a doula “top-rated,” what services you should expect, and how to choose the right support for your birth.

What Does a Birth Doula Actually Do?

A birth doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and decision-making support before, during, and shortly after birth.

Unlike medical providers who rotate shifts or manage clinical care, a doula focuses entirely on supporting the birthing parent and their partner.

At DoulaNova, birth support typically includes:

  • One or two prenatal meetings to prepare for birth, review comfort techniques, and informed decision-making

  • 24/7 on-call availability as your due date approaches

  • Continuous labor support from active labor through birth, or through surgery for a cesarean

  • 1–2 hours of postpartum support immediately after birth

  • One postpartum visit and connection to local resources

My approach is simple: your goals are my priorities.

What Makes a Doula “Top-Rated”?

When families search for the best doulas near them, they’re often looking for someone with:

Professional training and experience

I’m a Certified Birth Doula through DONA International, with additional training including:

  • HypnoBirthing Educator Certification

  • Spinning Babies techniques to help baby through the pelvis

  • Experience supporting 50+ births in hospital settings

But credentials alone aren’t what families remember most.

They remember how supported they felt. I recommend interviewing doulas and selecting the one who makes you feel calm and comfortable.

Why Birth Support Matters (No Matter What Kind of Birth You Want)

One thing I see over and over again in birth: Birth unfolds best when the nervous system feels safe.

Whether a family plans an unmedicated birth or chooses pain medication, labor tends to progress more smoothly when the birthing parent feels supported on three levels:

  • Emotional safety

  • Physical comfort

  • Clear information and communication from their provider

Labor can bring a lot of sensations, emotions, and decisions all at once. A doula helps ensure parents don’t have to carry all of that alone.

My approach focuses on:

  • Reducing fear

  • Increasing comfort through breathing, visualization, and positions

  • Helping partners stay actively involved

  • Slowing down the pace of the room so parents have space to make decisions

Safety comes from presence and care. And positive births often come from making the right decision for you at the right time.

A Real Example: Labor Support in Action

One of the most common challenges in labor is slow progress, occassionaly from a baby in a tricky position.

In one birth I supported, a first-time mom labored overnight through her early labor. Progress kept slowing, and anxiety began to rise when things stalled.

The hospital team changed shifts several times, and information from staff wasn’t always consistent. The parents needed steady support and clear guidance.

When they called me in to join them, we focused on:

  • Hands-on position changes to help baby rotate

  • Emotional reassurance during slower phases

  • Communication with the care team when an epidural wasn’t functioning properly

  • Creating a calmer environment so the mom could relax

As labor progressed and the baby shifted into a better position, she was able to deliver vaginally without additional intervention.

Afterward, the family shared this review:

“Virginia was honestly so much more helpful than we could have even idealized. We truly credit her and her help for our birth going as smoothly as it did. Everything from helping me through the pain and leading us through positions that shifted the baby so we could do a vaginal delivery that was as smooth as possible.”

Birth stories like this are why I do this work.

What Kind of Births Do DoulaNova Families Typically Want?

Many of the families I work with are planning unmedicated-leaning hospital births. They want:

  • The safety of a hospital setting

  • The freedom to move, change positions, and use comfort tools

  • Support to stay calm and confident during labor

I regularly attend births at:

  • Boulder Community Health

  • Avista Adventist Hospital

  • CU Longs Peak Hospital

  • And more...!

Families come from across Longmont, Boulder, Lafayette, Erie, Louisville, Niwot, and Lyons.

How to Choose the Right Doula

If you’re interviewing doulas, here are a few questions worth asking:

  • How do you support parents when labor stalls?

  • How do you involve partners during labor?

  • What comfort techniques do you use most often?

  • How do you help parents navigate decisions with medical providers?

Most importantly, ask yourself:

“Do I feel calm and supported when I talk to this person?”

Because during labor, that feeling matters more than anything else.
