What Are the Benefits of Hiring a Birth Doula?

Updated: Mar 12

If you're preparing for birth, you may have heard friends mention doulas or seen recommendations online. But many parents still wonder:

What does a birth doula actually do—and is it really worth it?

As a DONA-certified birth doula and HypnoBirthing educator serving Boulder

County, I’ve supported more than 50 births since 2021 through DoulaNova birth doula support. Over that time, I’ve seen firsthand how the presence of a doula can change the entire experience of birth—for both the birthing parent and their partner.

Here are some of the most meaningful benefits I see when families have a doula supporting them.

1. Labor Unfolds With Fewer Unnecessary Interventions

One of the biggest differences I notice between births with a doula and births without one is how labor unfolds.

When parents feel supported and confident, labor tends to progress more smoothly. Continuous support can help reduce anxiety and help parents stay grounded through each phase of labor.

Research summarized by Evidence Based Birth shows that continuous labor support is associated with:

  • Lower rates of Cesarean birth

  • Reduced use of certain medical interventions

  • Higher satisfaction with the birth experience

But beyond statistics, what I often see is this: when parents feel safe and supported, their bodies work more effectively during labor.

2. Parents Have Support Navigating Decisions

Birth can involve many decisions, sometimes quickly and under pressure.

Providers and nurses are responsible for medical care and safety, but they often rotate shifts during labor. A doula is the one person whose role is to stay present the entire time, helping parents process information and communicate with their care team.

I often help families:

  • Understand options when new decisions arise

  • Slow down the pace of the room when things feel rushed

  • Ask questions that help parents clarify what feels right for them

Ultimately, the decisions always belong to the parents. A doula simply helps ensure they have the space and clarity to make them.

3. Partners Feel More Confident and Engaged

Another huge benefit of doula support is how it helps partners.

Many partners want to be deeply supportive but simply don’t know what labor will look like or how to help in the moment.

During labor, I often guide partners in things like:

  • Comfort techniques

  • Position changes

  • Breathing and encouragement

  • Anticipating what the birthing parent may need next

Rather than replacing the partner, a doula helps the partner feel confident and involved.

4. Hands-On Comfort and Position Support

Much of my role during labor involves physical comfort and movement.

This can include:

  • Hands-on comfort measures

  • Position changes to help baby descend

  • Spinning Babies techniques to support baby’s positioning

  • Guided breathing and visualization

  • Creating a calm environment in a hospital setting

These small adjustments can make a big difference in how labor progresses and how the birthing parent experiences each contraction.

5. A Constant, Calm Presence During an Intense Experience

Birth is one of the most powerful experiences in life—but it can also be unpredictable.

One of the most meaningful things a doula provides is continuity.

Take this birth I recently supported as an example:

During a long night of labor, the birthing parent had been working through strong contractions in the bath with her partner. As labor intensified, she began feeling overwhelmed and unsure of what to do next.

Her partner started wondering whether they should ask for pain medication simply to help her escape the intensity.

When I arrived, I reassured them both and suggested it was time to move out of the bath and try a few new positions—three contractions at a time.

Within two position changes, labor shifted dramatically. Soon the unmistakable sounds of pushing began.

About thirty minutes later, their baby was born in an all-fours position, received by their midwife—exactly the undisturbed birth they had hoped for.

Later, both parents said that the moment of moving from the bath to the bed—when I stepped in with calm guidance and confidence in the moment they felt most overwhelmed—made all the difference.

Common Misconceptions About Doulas

Many families assume a doula isn't necessary or may misunderstand the role. Two things I hear often are:

“A doula replaces the partner.”

In reality, the opposite is true. A doula helps the partner stay involved and confident. Instead of feeling like they have to carry the entire responsibility of support, partners gain guidance and teamwork.

“You only need a doula for home birth.”

Most of the families I support are planning hospital births.

In fact, hospital births are often where continuous support can make the biggest difference, because the medical system is focused primarily on clinical care rather than emotional and physical support. Even the most patient-focused nurse has to leave the room to care for other laboring moms or update charts.

My Honest Answer to “Why Hire a Doula?”

After supporting dozens of births, my answer is simple. A doula brings knowledge, perspective, and tools from witnessing so many births into this one-time experience for your family.

Providers and nurses rotate shifts during labor, but a doula is the constant presence.

Every parent deserves continuous support from someone whose focus is on their comfort, emotional experience, and nervous system—something the modern medical system often doesn't have the capacity to provide.
